Mikes' First Competition Race Car

This is Dads' first race car, a soap box derby car that he built when he was about 12 years old. They raced down Thor hill in Spokane and and the winner at the finish line was determined by some modified version of a gas station bell that you ran over at to alert the attendant to fill your gas tank.Seems that it did not work out to well as he clearly crossed the finish line first and the system indicated a different winner. Dad remembers being embarrassed as his dad and uncle made lots of 'noise' to the officials over the situation, but the ruling was to go with who the system indicated the winner was. I guess that his first taste of how racing can go sometimes..........

The sponsor on the side of the car was Apollo Homes, his uncle Roger's company. They built modular homes in Chewelah, WA. The thing with the soap box cars is that no adults were supposed to build, just kids. In reality, it worked like the pinewood derby, some had a little more help with construction than others.
